Do I need an electrician to install Shelly?
It depends on the device. Plug-and-play products such as smart plugs need no installation at all — you plug them in and pair them.
Wired modules sit behind an existing switch or socket, or on the DIN rail in the consumer unit, and involve working on fixed mains wiring. In the UK that work should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and notifiable work must comply with Part P of the Building Regulations.
Will Shelly still work if my internet goes down?
Yes. Shelly devices run their logic on the device itself rather than in the cloud, so schedules, scenes and the physical switch on the wall keep working during an outage.
You lose remote access from outside the property and cloud-based voice control until the connection returns, but nothing inside the building stops functioning.
Does Shelly work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home?
Yes — all three, plus a long list of other platforms. Gen3 and Gen4 devices also support Matter, which is the industry standard that lets a device join Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings without a manufacturer-specific bridge.
For advanced setups, Shelly exposes a fully open local API over HTTP and MQTT, and integrates with Home Assistant, openHAB, Node-RED, KNX, Crestron, Control4 and more.
Do I need a hub or a bridge?
No. Shelly devices connect straight to your existing Wi-Fi network, so there is no proprietary hub to buy and nothing extra to keep powered in a cupboard.
Some Bluetooth and Zigbee accessories in the range use a Shelly device you already have as their gateway, but there is no separate hub product you are required to purchase.
What is the difference between Gen3 and Gen4?
Both generations run the same Shelly firmware and app. Gen4 is the newer platform, with a faster processor, more memory and, on many models, built-in Zigbee and Z-Wave alongside Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — so one device can join more ecosystems natively.
Gen3 devices remain fully supported and continue to receive over-the-air firmware updates.
Is the Shelly Smart Control app really free?
Yes. The app is free to download and free to use, with no account fee, no device limit and no subscription required for everyday control, scheduling, scenes and energy monitoring.
Shelly Cloud Premium is an optional paid tier that adds extended data history, advanced automation and additional reporting for users who want it.
How accurate is Shelly's energy monitoring?
Shelly devices with metering measure power directly in hardware rather than estimating it from a device profile, so readings reflect what the circuit actually drew.
The app reports live consumption and historical usage by device, room or appliance type, which is what makes it possible to identify what is genuinely costing money.
Are Shelly devices approved for use in the UK?
Yes. Shelly hardware is designed and engineered in Europe and carries CE and UKCA marking, with over-temperature protection built into the wired modules.
Devices receive over-the-air firmware updates, so security and stability fixes reach installed hardware without anyone having to visit the property.
